We are excited to announce the 2nd Bilingual Education Fair of DC!
WHAT: The Bilingual Education Fair of DC is the premier event in the DC region for parents, educators and community members to discover multi-lingual education options, personalized technologies, fun language resources and how to bring bilingual education to your community.
WHERE: Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage, 1816 12th St NW, Washington, DC 20009 Welcoming, historically significant, centrally located building with excellent facilities, one block from U Street Metro on green and yellow line. ADA accessible.
WHEN: Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 1 to 5pm.
WHO: Organized by DC Language Immersion Project, and co-sponsored by DC Public Schools and DC Public Charter School Board, the fair will feature 50 exhibitors including dual language programs, language and culture organizations, bilingual publishers, app developers, after school programs, daycare operators, and tutors. The fair is aimed at families with young children, educators and administrators from across the DC region who wish to increase access to linguistic and cultural competence.
GROWNUPS PROGRAM: From 2 to 4pm, our panel will discuss “Why, How and Where to Raise Bilingual Kids in the DC Region” during a multilingual conversation with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish and American Sign Language. Panelist include Former US Secretary of Education John King (TBC), Yessica Palomino parent at Bruce Monroe DCPS, LJ Yang, Chinese Language Coordinator at Washington Yu Ying PCS, Jeffrey Wood lead character in Beyond the Wall and M.A. Candidate at Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.
CHILDREN PROGRAM: Feel free to drop off your child while you visit with our exhibitors or enjoy with your child one of the many fun activities in Spanish, French, Arabic, Amharic and other languages brought to you by our wonderful partner Mullylingua. Space limited to 25 participants on a first come first serve basis. Detailed program coming soon!
EDUCATORS PROGRAM: Please refer to our “for Educators” page for the professional development session during the morning of the Fair.
SUSTENANCE: We will have water, juice, tea and coffee to keep you hydrated. We are working on having an array of multicultural food options parked outside the Thurgood Marshall Center, courtesy of the amazing food trucks of the DC area.
Last year fair‘s program for adults featured American University professor Amelia Tseng who presented on the cognitive and economic benefits of being bilingual. Parents and children attended the children program featuring story times in many languages including Hebrew, Arabic, French, Mandarin, Amharic, German and Spanish. Outreach was done in English and Spanish.
